Calculate your Shipping Cost
Shipping costs are based on cubic feet and weight. While we understand that this can get complicated for some items, we need to make sure we can fit everything in our trailer safely.
Cubic Feet = (Length (in) x Width (in) x Height (in) / 1,728
1 Cubic Foot = 1,728 Cubic Inches
OK, for standard Burner Bins (aka in the default world Home Depot/Lowes black and yellow 27 gallon containers) are 5 cubic fee, and therefore your cost will be $100 per bin.
We urge you to use this cubic foot calculator. This is the best way to determine the space you wish to reserve. If you obtain a fraction of a foot, round down if ,50 or less, and up if it is .51 or over.
Remember, we will be holding people to their paid for reserved allocation, and may refuse to accept overages. We also have a maximum weight for Burner Bins of 75 lbs. If we do accept items that exceed your reservation or are deemed overweight, you will be assessed a 20% surcharge at the time of loading.
Terms and conditions applicable to all shipping and can be found on the reservation form. You must read and accept them before we ship your gear.
BIKES – Standard bikes are charged a flat fee of $150. Importantly, you must prepare your bike for shipping by removing pedals and place them in a Burner Bin or take them with you in a backpack, etc. You must also align the handlebars with the frame. They cannot be locked when shipped as they will likely need to be moved more than once.
E-BIKES – E-bikes are heavy and less maneuverable. The shipping fee is $240. We You must deplete the battery for shipping to 30% or less. You do not need to change the handle-bar orientation or take off the pedals. The fee we are charging for E-bikes takes into account the added space it will take up in our trailer.
Please e-mail fckdfixdfreight@fckdfixd.org for details or to make reservations.
How It All Works
Types of Cargo
27 gallon Yellow Top Bins
Also known as Burner Bins, this is the most common packing option, and for good reason: they’re cheap, stackable, heavy duty, and typically carry just the right amount of stuff that you can lift them.
We highly recommend the Lowe’s version so that it’s easier to tetris and stack with everyone else’s bins. Home Depot has similar-but-not-quite-the-same 27 gallon bins, but they do not stack the same as the Lowes bins.
All yellow top bins are $95.00 to transport round trip.
Bikes
We love our bikes on Playa and it’s important that they arrive there safely. Please prep your bike by removing pedals and turning handlebar. Make sure your bike is labelled!
Tents
Please add your tent into your yellow top bin if possible. If it does not fit, tents may be transported in a strong bag that is labeled properly.
Labeling
Please label every individual article with the information below. We recommend labeling on multiple slides with large text.
- Name
- Phone number
- Camp
- Playa Address

Packing Tips
Make your bins look unique. Spray paint it. Use colored tape. Everyone on the container has yellow top bins. It will be hard to find yours in a sea of yellow topped bins unless it has distinguishing marks.
Make sure your bins are fully packed. Many hundreds of pounds could be stacked atop your containers. Packing them full will protect your items.
Other packaging
PVC, conduit, wood, etc. MUST be taped or ratchet strapped together, securely so they will not fall out of the bundle, roll away, etc.
Please ensure that you do not make your bins overly heavy. A single person should be able to lift each of your bins.
Any item not boxed/packed properly will not be allowed on the container and no refund will be provided.
If you have questions, please email us at fckdfixdfreight@fckdfixd.org
Loading in DC
The loading of the containers will take place
5720 General Washington Drive, Alexandria, VA 22312
How it works
Bring your belongings to our loading site.
When you arrive, you’ll realize that container load-in is really the start of everyone’s Burn! Please help each other out. Bring sunscreen, gloves, water or gatorade for yourself and your crew. If you’re able to, bring some drinks or snacks to share. Loading thousands of bins is hard work and we do this together.
All participants are expected to carry and pack your belongings into our containers. We have limited volunteers and literally tons of stuff to load. We appreciate your help being radically self reliant. If you are not able to lift your bins, please consider packing less in each bin or arriving with someone to help you both load and unload.
Load-in time slots
Load in hours: 12 noon to 5 pm on 8/5 – 8/6. Load in hours: 10 am to 5 pm on 8/12 – 8/13
We will contact you with more details and a time slot for load in. These are assigned and cannot be requested. They are based upon the day that you plan to arrive on Playa. This is done so that the people who arrive first on Playa, can pick-up their things in the front of the container and do not need to move other people’s things who arrive on a later date.

On Playa Arrival Date
Our containers are expected to arrive on Wednesday of build week – 8/26/23.
Transit delays are unlikely but can occur and we can not guarantee this arrival date. If you something to survive, we suggest not packing it on the container. This goes especially for the early days of build week. We will consistently update you on the arrival status via email and in the Facebook group. Please keep in mind that all of our own personal belongings and much of our camp infrastructure are shipped in the same containers so we’re pretty motivated to get it there on time.
On Playa Loading
All participants using our service are expected to carry your things into our containers. We have limited volunteers and literally tons of belongings to pack. We appreciate your help being radically self reliant. If you are not able to carry your bins, please consider packing less in each bin or getting someone to help you both load and unload. All items reloaded on the container must be packed in boxes, just as it went on. This includes bikes. Items can still be damaged on the return trip.
Unloading Back in DC
The unloading of the containers will take place:
5720 General Washington Drive, Alexandria, VA 22312
Beginning at 9AM all items will be removed from the container and placed in the area around the parking lot. Everyone is expected to help unload the containers. Please don’t just look for your own bins. Please be dressed ready to help unload bins & be prepared for a lot of playa dust (yay!)
There’s only a handful of organizers of this and we work all day. We’re not able to make special arrangements for individuals. We appreciate your practice of self-reliance and making your own arrangements if you’re not able to pick up your personal items. We do not have a warehouse to store your belongings if they are not picked up. We reserve the right to dispose of or donate any items not picked up by 2 PM.
Policies
FCKD|FIXD is not responsible for loss or damage to your property. Packing your items as instructed and arriving at the specified times is the best way to protect your property.
We reserve the right to open any and all items loaded on the containers.
We reserve the right to refuse loading any materials that do not comply with our instructions or may pose another risk to the safe use of our service for everyone. If you’re not sure about something, please just ask.
You are responsible for unloading and reloading your things onto the containers at load-in, on the Playa, and at load-out. Make sure that you can lift your stuff on and off the container.
We reserve the right to dispose of or donate any items not picked up by 3 PM on load-out day.
All purchasers and participants are required to sign a waiver of liability and provide legal identification upon checking in and loading belongings onto the container.
Prohibited Items
Do not pack any of the following:
Any illegal substances of any kind – anything that could get you arrested anywhere in the US is not allowed on the container. You are endangering everyone else on the container and the containers get delayed (or – Larry Harvey forbid – confiscated) due to your illegal stuff…
All items flammable at high heat
Generators unless they are brand new and never have had gas in them
Explosives
Firearms
Gas
Fuel
Compressed gas
Anything damaged by extreme heat (i.e. batteries, un-canned or dry food, etc.)
The containers get very very hot, at times in excess of 120°F. At that level of heat, those items which cannot stand high heat (like batteries) will often explode and ruin everything around them or they can start a fire (like fire flow toys with fuel on them). So, don’t put them in the container.
